Timeline view
A Timeline view lays the rows of a table out as bars on a time axis: "Lay this table's rows out on a time axis by their start date. An end date is optional." Each bar runs from the row's start date to its end date, and the bars can be grouped into rows by a select column, for example one row per forwarder. It suits plans: routes, projects, rentals, staff on assignments.
Before you start
- Timeline views are part of every plan.
- The table needs a Date column for the start. "No rows have a start date yet." shows until at least one row has one.
- Viewers see the timeline and open records. Moving bars and changing settings need edit rights on the table.
Create a timeline
- In the project rail, click Add view under the table, then Timeline.
- Fill in New timeline and click Create view.
| Field | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Name | The view's name in the rail. "Optional". | Harmonogram tras |
| Source table | The table, when you create the view outside a table. | Zlecenia transportowe |
| Start date column | Where each bar starts. | Załadunek |
| End date column (optional) | Where each bar ends. "Without an end date every row is a single day on the axis." | Rozładunek |
| Label events with | The text on each bar. Automatic: "the table's first text column." | Zlecenie |
| Group into rows by | A select column: one row of the timeline per option. No grouping puts every bar in one list. | Spedytor |
Label events with and Group into rows by sit under More options.
The timeline
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Today | Scrolls back to today. |
| Fit | "Put the whole plan on screen at once". |
| Week | "One week across the screen". |
| Month | "One month across the screen". |
| Quarter | "Three months across the screen". |
| Year | "A year across the screen". |
| Undo | Your recent changes to the table (Ctrl+Z too). |
| View settings | The columns the view reads. |
| Share | The read-only link (see Share a timeline). |
When an editor picks a zoom, it is saved on the view, so the next person opens the timeline the same way; a Viewer's zoom lasts only for their visit. When you scroll away from the bars, an arrow points back: "Your rows are back this way" or "Your rows are further along".
With grouping, each option of the grouping column is a row with its name on the left; rows whose cell is empty gather under Uncategorized, and an option without bars says "Nothing here yet".
Work with bars
- Open a record. Click a bar to open the record window (see The record window).
- Move a bar. Drag it sideways. The move snaps to whole days. With an end date column, both dates move by the same number of days, so the bar keeps its length; without one, only the start moves.
- Take it back. Undo reverses your last moves.
A bar whose end date is before its start date is marked: "The end date is before the start date". Fix the dates in the record or the grid.
The footer
Like the calendar, the footer counts what the timeline could place: "24 scheduled", "3 with no date yet", "1 with an unreadable date", and "5 hidden by the filter".
View settings
View settings change the start, end, label and grouping columns: "The source table stays the same. Change the columns the view reads dates, titles and colours from." Click Save.
Share a timeline
The share button publishes the timeline as a read-only page, Public or Organization only (see Kanban boards for how links work). Visitors see the bars and the axis but cannot move bars or open records. Quanty Ghost columns are left out.
Good to know
- A drag reschedules, it does not stretch. To make a bar longer, change its end date in the record or the grid.
- Several timelines per table. One by forwarder, one by vehicle: each is its own view.
- Deleting the view keeps the rows.
