Calls and recordings

Audio and video calls happen inside Chat, with the people of a channel or a direct message. Members and admins in the conversation can record a call: after the call, Quanty posts the transcript and a summary with decisions and action items in the conversation, so the people who missed the call can catch up.

Before you start

  • Calls are part of every plan. The plan sets how many people fit in one call and how many call hours the organization has each month (see Limits per plan).
  • Only members of your organization who can see the conversation take part. There are no links for outside guests and no dial-in numbers.
  • The browser asks once for permission to use the microphone and the camera.
  • Recording needs AI, so Viewers cannot record. The transcript uses the organization's included transcription hours and then AI credits; the summary always uses AI credits.

Start or join a call

WhereWhat happens
A direct message or group conversationThe phone (Start an audio call) or camera (Start a video call) button in the header rings the others: "Piotr Spedytor is calling", with Accept and Decline. The ring stops by itself after 45 seconds.
A channelNobody is rung. A line under the header says "Kasia Próbna started a video call" and "3 in the call", with Join. The list marks the channel with "Call in progress".

There is one call per conversation at a time. The buttons explain when a call cannot start: "The call is full", "Calls are off in this organization", "An archived conversation cannot be called", "Join the channel first", "You are already in a call" or "This browser cannot make calls".

In the call

The call runs in a small window in the bottom-right corner (Move the window to drag it), with the people, who is speaking and the time.

ControlWhat it does
Mute / UnmuteYour microphone.
Turn the camera on / Turn the camera offYour camera.
Share your screen"What do you want to share?": Entire screen, A window or A browser tab (with its sound if you like). Others see "Kasia Próbna is sharing the screen". Stop sharing ends it.
Record the callStarts a recording (see Record a call).
Full screen / Back to the small windowA grid of videos over the page, or the small window. Minimize hides it to a bar.
Leave the callYou leave; the call goes on for the others.

While you are in a call, everyone in Chat sees you as In a call. The person who started the call, or an administrator, can end it for everyone; otherwise it ends when the last person leaves. The conversation then shows "The call ended after 12 min, 3 people took part".

Devices

Device settings (also the Calls & devices tab of Chat settings) pick the Microphone, Camera and Speaker: "The devices chosen here are used in every call. During a call you can switch with the arrow next to the microphone and the camera." "Speak to test: the bar moves when the microphone hears you."; Play a test sound checks the speaker. If the browser blocks a device, the window says how to allow it, for example "Allow the microphone to join the call."

How calls travel

Calls go directly between the participants' browsers and are encrypted in transit. When a direct connection is not possible, for example behind a strict company firewall, the audio and video pass through a relay server that only forwards the encrypted stream. A call is not stored anywhere unless someone records it.

Limits per plan

Platinum8 people12 people160 h4 h
Custom8 people12 people200 h4 h

Call hours and transcription hours are pooled for the whole organization: the hours per person times the number of seats. When the pool is used up: "Your organization has used all call hours of its plan this month. Calls already going on are not cut off. Upgrade to start or join new ones." A full call says "Your plan allows up to 4 people in a call. Upgrade to have more people join."

Record a call

  1. In the call, click Record the call.
  2. Record this call? says what happens: "Everyone in the call will see that it is being recorded. The audio is transcribed and summarized by AI, which uses your AI allowance, and the recording and the transcript are saved in Files." It shows how much included transcription is left this month and the price after that, for example "After that, about 900 credits per hour."
  3. Click Start recording.

From then on every participant sees a red Recording mark with "Kasia Próbna is recording", and anyone who joins is told: "This call is being recorded by Kasia Próbna. The transcript and a summary will be posted in the conversation." with OK.

  • Only the audio is recorded, never the video or the shared screen.
  • One person records at a time ("Somebody else is already recording this call.").
  • The recording stops with Stop recording, when the recorder leaves, when the call ends, or after three hours ("The recording stopped after three hours.").
  • "Recording saved. The transcript and the summary will appear in the conversation shortly, and a copy goes to Files."

Tell people before you record

Chat shows the recording mark to everyone in the call. Informing the people you record, and asking for their consent where your law or company rules require it, is yours to do.

What you get

After the call, the result is posted in the conversation as an AI message, Call recording:

  • the length and the number of people ("42 min · 3 people");
  • the summary in four parts: Summary, Decisions, Action items and Open questions (written by the AI in the conversation's language);
  • the Transcript, folded (Show all);
  • the audio file and the transcript as a text file.

Everyone who can read the conversation sees it, including people who were not in the call. A recording in which nobody spoke says "No speech was recognised in this recording." If the recording cannot be processed, the conversation says "The recording of the call could not be processed".

Where it is stored

The audio, the transcript and the summary stay in the conversation, encrypted like every other file in Chat, and a copy is filed in Files: a channel's recordings in Messages under the channel's name, a direct message's under Direct messages, visible only to its participants. They count towards your organization's storage. Deleting the message removes them from the conversation; the copies in Files stay until someone deletes them in Files.

What it costs

Transcribing is free up to the transcription hours included in your plan; after that it costs about 900 credits per recorded hour at today's rates, and the Record this call? dialog always shows the current figure. The AI summary of each recording is charged on top in credits, at the model's rates, even within the included hours. Both are charged to the person who pressed record (see Credits and usage). Calls themselves cost no credits; they use call hours.

If there is no Record the call button: "Recording is not available: no transcription service is set up for this organization." Ask us.

Good to know

  • No outside guests. Calls are for members of your organization only.
  • Do not disturb silences incoming-call rings; Focus mode shows a Join banner without ringing.
  • Archived channels cannot hold calls.
